THE WOMAN UPSTAIRS

Feature Film

Synopsis

La Madame and Caracortada make out in their Chevy Bel Air as they cruise down a deserted street. Ahead of them, a woman in an elegant coat, in tears, crosses the road. Still distracted, they don’t see her in time and hit her. The car stops. The couple gets out—and with the police likely to arrive at any moment, they decide to hide the body in the trunk.

From there, the Chevy changes hands throughout the night: it is stolen from La Madame and Caracortada by El Travesti and El Chulo; from them by El Jíbaro and La Prostituta Polaca; then by Los Apartamenteros, followed by Los Serenateros, and finally Los Gamines. Each new pair or group eventually discovers what’s in the trunk—and each takes something from the victim, piece by piece, until nothing is left.

Near dawn, Juanito—a street vendor known by everyone and used by everyone—finds the Chevy abandoned. He thinks La Prostituta Polaca would love a ride in it: he’s in love with her, and she returns his feelings. Earlier that night, she gave him an elegant coat. Now Juanito stands there, hesitating—wondering whether to get into the car or walk away.
